Behaviour

At Calthorpe Academy, we use Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). The overall aim of PBS is to improve the quality of the child’s life and the quality of life of those around them.

It is an evidence-based approach which looks at adapting the environment to meet the needs of the child and teaching new skills. PBS focuses on teaching alternative behaviour that meets the same needs as the behaviour that challenges in a more appropriate way. We believe that behaviour is a form of meaningful communication and therefore every effort should be made to understand and respond appropriately to this communication.

The focus is on long term change that can be generalised throughout school and life beyond. Behaviour Support Plans are an important component of PBS. We use a tiered approach to behaviour support; universal, targeted and specialist.

Universal Support – Support for all learners

pbs_triangle
  • Ensuring the environment is suitable for all (visual supports, good practice strategies)
  • School structure and predictable routines
  • Differentiated curriculum pathways with individual targets
  • Developing independence and skill teaching through the curriculum
  • Total communication environment – focus on developing communication skills for each learner including choice making
  • Wellbeing passports for all learners (including communication strategies, likes, dislikes, sensory preferences, medical information)
  • Data collection for decision making
  • Reinforcement strategies appropriate to the learner

Targeted Support – Support for some learners

  • Targeted Behaviour Support plan including expressive and receptive communication, Primary prevention, Secondary prevention and reactive strategies specific to the individual
  • Antecedent function-based strategies from the brief functional assessment
  • Skill teaching based on basic understanding of the function
  • Risk assessment
  • Sensory profile for learners with Autism or where appropriate
  • Continuous data collection and monitoring for decision making

Specialist Support – Support for a few learners

  • Functional Behaviour Assessment completed by Behaviour Support Team including observations, data collection and questionnaires/interviews.
  • Specialist Behaviour Support plan including expressive and receptive communication, Primary prevention, Secondary prevention and reactive strategies specific to the individual plus specific behaviours of concern and functions, functionally equivalent replacement behaviours and reinforcement
  • Continuous data collection and monitoring for decision making and evaluation
  • Risk assessment
